What is Kintsugi?
Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese craft, dating back to the Muromachi period (14th–16th century). It is the art of repairing broken pottery and porcelain with natural lacquer (urushi) and finishing the cracks with gold powder.
Lacquer slowly hardens by absorbing moisture from the air, making it a strong and safe adhesive. For centuries, it has been used to restore tableware and valuable ceramics, many of which are preserved in museums today.
While gold is most commonly used (Kintsugi), variations include silver (Gintsugi) or colored lacquer finishes. Kintsugi is not only a repair technique but also a philosophy: it transforms broken objects into works of art, celebrating their history and imperfections.
